Caltrans completes the 2011 construction season
Placer and Nevada Counties – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) announced today the completion of the 2011 construction season on Interstate 80 (I-80) between Colfax and the Nevada State line.
The completed projects on I-80 in the Sierra Nevada:
- Donner Summit Safety Roadside Rest Area (SRRA)
- Location: I-80 at the Donner Summit
- Purpose: Replace the 45 year old eastbound and westbound SRRAs with facilities that are able to accommodate the more than three million annual visitors and meet today’s Americans with Disability Act standards.
- Construction Facts: Doubled the number of restroom facilities, installed heated sidewalks between the parking lot and facility, installed independent water and power systems to keep the facility running during adverse weather conditions. All upgrades were completed on schedule.
- Donner 3
- Location: I-80 from the Donner Summit to Truckee
- Purpose: Replace the roadway pavement, install new stormwater collection systems and construct new sediment/debris collection vaults and basins.
- Construction facts: Restored 12.8 miles of roadway back to its original condition, added or rehabilitated 61 drainage facilities, turned 240,000 tons of old recycled roadway materials into new pavement and completed the project one year ahead of schedule.
The following construction projects are now in winter suspension. Work will resume in the spring of 2012:
- Emigrant Gap
- Location: I-80 from Carpenter Flat to Hampshire Rock
- Purpose: Total roadway replacement, upgrade drainage systems and install new sediment/debris collection systems.
- Schedule: Completion is expected in fall 2013.
“Caltrans is excited to provide these much needed improvements in the Sierra Nevada.” said Caltrans District 3 Director Jody Jones. “These projects will assist motorists in all weather conditions, provide additional safety, ensure that the million dollars of commerce continues to flow in and out of California and maintain our state as a leader in transportation for decades to come.”
